A Day Trip to Mendocino & Fort Bragg
If you’re looking for an easy day trip that feels like a breath of fresh air (literally), Mendocino and Fort Bragg are a coastal dream — especially when you’re trying to escape the Sacramento heat. When it’s 100+ degrees in the valley, the foggy NorCal coastline hits so different.
We didn’t do everything we planned to — but what we did do? Totally worth it.
(I only have videos, if you want to see all of the stops, head to my Tiktok/IG @ClaireAnneTravels)
Here’s how our day trip went down 👇
First stop: Glass Beach
Yes, it’s touristy. Yes, it’s still magical. The little colorful pieces of sea glass scattered across the shore make it feel like a hidden treasure spot — even if you’re sharing it with a few other people. It’s not a typical sandy beach, but it’s beautiful in its own rugged way. And honestly, it’s just one of those places that makes you pause and go "wow, California really has it all."
Pro tip: Wear comfy shoes — the trail to the beach is easy, but a little rocky. Also, don’t take the glass home! It’s tempting, I get it, but we’re leaving the magic for the next person
Headlands Trail — Coastal Beauty at Its Best
This was probably my favorite part of the day. The Headlands Trail is stunning. You're walking along dramatic cliffs with that classic NorCal coastline stretching in every direction. The waves crashing below, wildflowers along the edge, and sea birds flying overhead — it seriously felt like a scene out of a movie.
It’s one of those hikes that’s more of a long scenic walk, so you get all the views without the burnout. If you only have time for one thing in Mendocino, make it this.
And honestly? Breathing in that cool ocean air while knowing it's blazing back in Sac made it feel extra magical.
Russian Gulch Bridge & Our “Almost” Waterfall Hike
Okay, this is where the day started to catch up with us. We made it to Russian Gulch Bridge — which, by the way, is so pretty it deserves its own photoshoot — and had every intention of doing the waterfall hike from there…
…but we were tired, a little too cozy in the car, and honestly just not in the mood for a longer hike. So, we admired the view, stretched our legs a bit, and made a mental note to come back when we have a bit more energy. No regrets, though — the views from the bridge area are chef’s kiss.
Final Thoughts
Was it the most packed day? No. Did we check off everything on our list? Also no.
But sometimes, the best day trips are the ones where you don’t do it all. You slow down, soak up the views, and leave feeling recharged — with a little FOMO to fuel your next trip.
If you’re trying to beat the heat and want something that feels easy, beautiful, and coastal-cute, Mendocino and Fort Bragg are 100% worth the drive. Glass Beach, the Headlands Trail, and Russian Gulch? All hits.
Next time: that waterfall trail is mine
