Best Hikes Near Sacramento: 10+ Trails Under an Hour Away

                        Best Hikes Near Sacramento

I was born and raised in Sacramento, CA. For most of my life, I stuck to the same familiar spots—weekend sailing trips, local favorites, and the go-to California road trip routes. But it wasn’t until recently that I started to really explore what’s right in our own backyard.

What surprised me the most? Just how many beautiful hiking trails and hidden waterfalls are less than an hour outside of Sacramento. Whether you’re looking for something low-key and beginner-friendly or ready to challenge yourself a bit more, there’s something on this list for every kind of day trip.

If you are new to hiking, here is my guide on what to bring: Click here

If you’re craving fresh air, epic views, or a quick nature escape without a long drive, these are some of my favorite trails and waterfalls to check out:

1. Sly Park (Jenkinson Lake Trail)
This one is a classic. Shady forest paths, peaceful lake views, and small waterfalls if you go after a rainy week. It’s a solid loop if you want a full-day adventure, or you can keep it chill and turn back early.

2. Lake Clementine Trail (Auburn)
This trail takes you right under the iconic Foresthill Bridge and ends at a dam waterfall—such a cool payoff. It’s one of those hikes that makes you feel like you’re deep in nature, even though you're not far from the city.

3. Foresthill Bridge Viewpoints
Not really a hike, but if you park near the bridge and explore the surrounding trails, you’ll get some of the best views in the area. Plus, the bridge itself is the highest in California!

4. Webber Falls
A bit farther north but still worth mentioning. This one feels like a secret. Short trail, beautiful double waterfall, and great for a quiet picnic if you're up for the drive.

5. Stevens Trail (Colfax)
Challenging but rewarding. You’ll get canyon views, wildflowers in spring, and even swimming spots if you’re down to venture a little off-path. Definitely bring water—this one can heat up fast!

6. Feather Falls, Hollow Falls & Phantom Falls (Oroville area)
Waterfall lovers, these are for you. Each one has a different vibe—Phantom Falls is seasonal and feels straight out of a movie, while Feather Falls is a longer, more intense trek.

7. Quarry Road Trail (Auburn State Recreation Area) (I have been here but this was before I started documenting everything)
An easier riverfront hike that’s great for all levels. You’ll walk alongside the American River with plenty of spots to stop and take in the views.

8. Beale Falls (Spenceville Wildlife Area)
This one can get muddy in winter, but it’s such a hidden gem. Open fields, wildflowers, and a beautiful waterfall at the end. Great for springtime.

9. Bassi Falls (El Dorado National Forest)
A short but rocky hike leads you to a powerful waterfall—especially strong in early summer. Feels like something you'd find hours deeper in the mountains, but it’s surprisingly accessible.

10. Dutch Creek Falls (I have been here, but it was before my influencing days)
Lush, green, and often overlooked. This hike takes you through thick forest and leads to a peaceful waterfall—ideal if you’re craving solitude and stillness.

11. Historic Suspension Bridge – Mineral Bar
This one’s more about the vibes than the challenge. The suspension bridge, the river, and the surrounding trails make for a scenic, relaxing day trip. Bring snacks and take your time.

I’m still discovering more spots every month, but these have become my go-to list for quick outdoor escapes. If you’re local or just passing through Sacramento, don’t sleep on these trails—they’ll change the way you see Northern California.
